Multiple locations associated with a project

As a programme manager with large programmes which stretch over multiple locations I would like to be able to associate my programme with more than one location and have multiple map points displayed, because otherwise it is hard to understand the geographic layout of a programme.

A humble suggestion:

If a project has multiple countries all within a single continent, we might sniff that and zoom Google Maps to show just that continent.

If a project has multiple countries divided between multiple continents, we might sniff that and zoom Google Maps to show a global map.

This is harder to achieve with the existing Google Maps v3 javascript code. It's the kind of calculation that would be much easier with a full geospatial GeoDjango database.
Investigating.

Having access to our own API would make it easier to asynchronously fetch and display location data without blocking page load. Right now, particularly global maps generate a lot of markup and significantly increase page load times.
Maps are a good use case for an eventual Akvo RSR API.
